This series represents the Four Archangels. Two are mentioned by name in the Bible and two are mentioned in the Apocrypha.
I completed this series in 2005 and all of the originals are in a private collection.

“Michael”

Michael’s name means “Like unto God.” The lightening is a symbol of power and of God. Michael is the warrior angel who battles Satan. He is frequently portrayed slaying a dragon, the symbol of Satan. He wears a crown and armor. The candle is a symbol of wisdom, power and God.

“Gabriel”
Watercolor 18x24 Gabriel’s name means “God is my strength.” This a symbol of strength, courage and Christ. He wears a crown and is always portrayed with multicolored wings. He is a messenger of God and the iris is a symbol for a message of hope. The lily is a symbol of purity and of Mary, Christ’s mother. He announced the conception of Christ to Mary. He also frequently carries a scroll for his messages. This particular Lion on his tunic is a symbol of strength, courage and Christ. He wears a crown and is always portrayed with multicolored wings. He is a messenger of God and the iris is a symbol for a message of hope. The lily is a symbol of purity and of Mary, Christ’s mother. He announced the conception of Christ to Mary. He also frequently carries a scroll for his messages. This particular scroll is also a weapon as the Word arms us as well. The map above his head represents that he is a messenger of God and is frequently sent to deliver messages all over the world, according to scripture.

“Uriel”

Uriel’s name means “Light of God.” He frequently has flames coming from his hands and carries a scroll. He is in charge of prophesies and judgments. The hand coming down is a symbol of God and His favor. The dove is a symbol for the Holy Spirit and His prophecies. The almond is a symbol for divine approval. The oil is a symbol for anointing and the grace of God. The birthday candles represent the angel’s name, wisdom, God. There are nine candles for the fruit of the Spirit.

“Raphael”

Raphael’s name means “Medicine of God.” The mallow flower is a symbol of healing and forgiveness. He is a healer and protects the young and the innocent. Traditionally, he is the angel who announced Christ’s birth to the shepherds. He can also carry a sword.
